Q & A CONSIDERATIONS (Your Answers are due: Monday 11 March, 2024)

  • What do you do? What sort of things do you make? Or capture? Or select?

I do photography, particularly in portrait photography. I like taking pictures of people, not only their face but anything that can represents them.

My previous project (from the last term of last year) was on my observation of a person, in order to investigate the mystery of this woman, as a means to reveal something of her. It was an observation of my friend Jiawei who has a morning routine at home including meditative and mindful practices. Practices that myself do as well.

When I was photographing my friend, I was paying attention to her face, to her behavior, to her reaction and actions. During her meditative practices, I was taking photos of her face, her feet, her legs, her hands, etc. And through that, I was able to pay attention and find that in these I could find shadows. I liked the use of natural light on her and I think it made a difference on the pictures produced.

Last year in semester 1, I also did a photo book of portraits of 12 young women of the same age as well, including myself, showing that every woman is beautiful their own way no matter their differences and ethnicity.

  • How do you make decisions during the process of your work? How and why do you select

the materials, techniques, themes that you do?

    - finding similarities among my pictures in terms of formal qualities

    - finding the right composition

    - film making techniques  (types of shots, camera angles)

    - find strangeness in my work which could be interesting

  • What are you valuing in the work?

    - the ability to show my aspiration for higher things/purpose in life, and my spirituality.

    - composition

    - strangeness found in my pictures/videos (which was not done on purpose but turned out to be something interesting.

  • What are your sources, do you refer to existing images?

     - Week 3 - Bruce Nauman - Lip Sync, 1969

    - Adel Abidin (b. 1973) Bread of Life (2008)

    - Steve Carr - Variations for troubled hands

  • What are you trying to say or infer in the work?

Serenity, Tranquility, Peace, Inner peace through meditative and mindful practices during a morning routine (from a friend from a meditation club, Jiawei)

  • How is the way you are saying it, with the materials, techniques and relations of emphasis between elements, the best for the idea you want to present?

  • What is it you’ve been trying to do to make the work relevant in relation to ideas, cultural circumstances or contemporary issues?

     - trying to take videos/photos of my friend doing yoga, meditation, in order to express spirituality.

  • How does this work fit into a larger body of work or overarching project of ideas (if it does)?

  • Are your ideas changing and if so how?

     - might thinking on working with more than one person

    - would expand more on the world around my friend, Jiawei, rather than on the meditation practice with yoga.

The idea of focusing my project only on her morning routine which is of meditative practices, now I am expanding my project on larger area like going outside of her house and going in her neighborhood to photograph things that she finds interesting. So that it is now her and the world/ her in the/her world, and the meditation thing is just a side thing.

    - ideas of spirituality now, how can i show my spirituality, view on spirituality in photographs. (philosophical questions such as who am I? what is the goal of my life? why am I here?)

    - luxury of isolation (the benefits of being alone but also the bad things of being alone)

    - finding strange moments/pictures/videos in my work could lead to an interesting aspect of my work.

  • Has anyone done this kind of work in the past?

     No. Haven't found yet.

  • Does anyone else do it now? Who are the artists that occupy this terrain?

    None found.

Only found this artist : Week 3 - Bruce Nauman - Lip Sync, 1969 , who did a similar framing on the mouth, as a video I did of my friend doing a japa meditation which chanting (repetition of a mantra) in order to evolve spiritually.

  • Who are the writers on these subjects? What specifically have they said, which then potentially motivates your own thinking for your work?

  • What histories are you contributing to within this field of practice?
